Learn How To Blog Part Time Successfully
How To Blog For Newbies Day 17
I still haven’t make it yet to the major leagues like Problogger or John Chow. In fact, I have always wonder, would I ever be a professional blogger one day, no problem if it’s a year, I just want to succeed. I will just have to do this part time. I still need my day’s job to pay my bills, send my kid to the best education program, maintain my standard of living and much more. Anyway, to those of you who are still in the same league as I am, I urge you to strive on! I am going to give you some survival tips on how to blog part time and the way we should change our mind set.
Tip 1 : Make Blogging Your Hobby
Like me, your initial flirt with blogs probably came due to the desire for a good passive income that would render you financially independent in days to come. All right folks, you have come so far, and I would like to urge you to change this thought.
When you learn how to blog, what do you do passionately for your leisure. Do you hit the booze club or do you indulge on movie marathons in the weekends?
Make blogging your favourite pass time from now on. Quit thinking about making money from your blog for the time being.
Tip 2 : Change The Employee’s Mindset
We are part time bloggers. We have probably been brainwashed into becoming an employee since the day we started our pre-school in the 70s or 80s. Don’t agree?
What did you answer your class teacher when she asked you about your ambition? I remember nearly all of my classmates said something about becoming doctors, teachers, pilots, managers…none mentioned about becoming a boss! Ok, you may argue otherwise but let’s not dwell on that.
My own father always tells me to get a good degree, land a good job with a fat paycheck and everything will falls perfectly together. Well, what my dad preached all came through eerily except for the last part. My mind is still not fullfilled. I know I am built for greater things but in order for me to achieve what I wanted, I need to rewire my mind.
Tip 3: Find A Mentor Whom Is An Entrepreneur
All my professional years as a Business Development Executive, my mentors have always turned out to be senior managers. So what do they coach me? You guess it right, to become a better manager. As a manager, I’m trained to run a business. Sometimes, due to the reputation of the company, a manager can take a break and the business still run in auto-pilots.
Starting a business without a reputable brand to back your start up is a complete new ball game. 9 out of 10 business failed after the initial 2 years of operation. As a result, consider yourself to have dug a treasure chest if a successful entrepreneur, regardless of the business he is in agreed to put you under his wings. He would probably be the important pillar whom are able to psyche you up when you are at your lowest in your blog business.
Tip 4: Strive Forward And Continue The Marathon
In 2007, Technorati alone was already tracking 112.8 Million blogs. Imagine the competitors you and me are facing daily when we learn how to blog. No wonder there is no traffic!
Anyway, here comes the good news.
“According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.” – New York Times
In other words, if 100 bloggers started out at the same time, and I managed to persevere for 120 days, that would leave me only 4 competitors vying for the elusive traffic. Or, I could end up making the statistic, depending on my stamina.
This blog was started on the 25 November 2009. On the 31 December 2009, she achieved Page Rank 2 together with my first website, SphereScreen.com. Up till today, I have already updated HowToBlog.org for 45 days. Boy, that’s another 75 days to go to see 95 % of my peers falling off from the radar screen….
Tips 5: Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew
I don’t know about you, but during start up, I could only manage 2 blogs effectively with my limited time resources. However, it’s good to manage more than one website because you can always work on your secondary site when you ran out of ideas for the primary blog.
In this way, you would feel less overwhelmed by worries when one blog is not showing the results that you wanted.
Tips 6: Learn How To Overcome Fear
Fear would never fail to find his way into our fragile heart when we run our blogs. Always fight back harder when the fear of failure envelops us by reading my previous post on “How To Blog Fearlessly With 5 Strategies“.
Always remember, in the blog business, we hold these advantages. Unlike the brick and mortar business, we don’t need a large war chest to fund our venture, we can run our websites where ever we want, we can blog while still watching our kids grow and we can still take a break without running into bankruptcies.
