Learn How To Blog By Registering Your Own Domain Name

How To Blog For Newbies Day 22

I’m not an expert domainer, but I have managed to get some good advice on the reasons for getting the right domain name in your internet business.

Naturally, choosing a domain name is also essential if you want to have your own blog. Your own web address plays an important role in building a strong brand for your hard work. So start learning how to blog with your own domain name !

Begin by searching from a domain name registry. A domain name should include your most important keywords as much as possible. This is due to the way Google matches the text of ads (sponsored keywords) and indexes websites against the search terms that users type in.

Even though Google’s bots are superbly capable of indexing the entire content of millions of websites, the domain name of a site – much like the title of a book – is still the clearest guide to relevance. For example, if a user search for ‘How To Blog’, and the domain includes those words, that’s a strong indication that it’s relevant to this particular user, thus Google will tend to place it higher up in the search ranking.

Apart from that, on Google result pages, the terms that the user typed in will be highlighted in bold wherever they appear. If part or all of your domain name end up in bold, they will make your ad or listing entry more likely to be spotted by the searcher.

Top-Level Domain

The top-level domain (TLD) is the final part of the web address, such as ‘.com’, ‘.net’, ‘.org’ or ‘.us’. If you are aiming primarily at the US market for your blog, it make sense to choose .us. For an international audience, it’s best to consider .com. However, it all depends on your intended identity. In your targeted market, do you believe that being perceived to be a US company will result in more sales? Normally, most of my domain mentors will suggest to get a .com, irregardless of your audience’s geographical location.

The Next Alternative

What if the domain name you want has already been taken? Try  other TLD extensions like .biz, .info, .ws and .mobi. Observe that each name exists separately within each TLD. Therefore, if someone already has howtoblog.com, you still can register howtoblog.biz and so on.

However, unless you have a compelling reason to use these alternative TLDs, they should be avoided. For instance, there’s little point in spending money in marketing the name ‘ Jude’s Textile’ if users who go to judestextile.com (which is the most obvious domain) will find a completely different company-particularly since this domain is also likely to rank highly in the Google search results when people look for ‘Jude’s Textile’.

For a business targeting users of mobile devices, .mobi might be justified; if you are a pan-European personality, .eu is a valid choice. The TLD .biz was invented to provide an alternative to .com, so is .us, but its obvious which one I would consider had higher credibility.

If the desired domain name is taken, try reorganizing the keywords in a different order or turning nouns into verbs. Maybe you can even get the existing domain name owner to sell it to you at a reasonable price.

If you are just into blogging, forget about buying combinations of all possible keywords. Get one with the best possible keyword or key phrase and just stay focus. You can perform SEO on the domain later to optimize on the long tail keywords of your choice later.

Instructions On Domain Registration:

1. Search The Internet

Start by choosing your desired domain name from registrars like GoDaddy.com. You should be looking for all reasonable combinations, so that if your research leads to a different name later, there’s a possibility that you have already bagged it. Make use of Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get the best phrase combinations (this is another lesson altogether).

2. Which TLD?

Try to get .com wherever possible. If not, a .net or .org would also suffice. For all you know, you just need one domain for your blog, so it really doesn’t matter which TLD. However, just keep in mind, a .com will be better indexed and a better value if you want to sell it later.

3. The Detail

Please make sure you get the registration details correct. If the domain is to be owned by your very own limited company, that should be reflected in the registration. Otherwise, register it to yourself. A domain name can have a value because there are markets out there trading in domain names. Make sure you stand to get the benefit.

4. Get Ready To Pay

Time to pay up! Luckily, domain names are cheap, but again, that doesn’t mean you should go on a shopping spree without any discipline. Those ending in .com cost only around USD 10 and you are allowed to register them for a minimum of one year.

So good luck for now. If you happen to get the very name that you desire, keep us informed. Let us share in to your joy.
