It seems the update system and lack of updates was to blame... I can't believe after I did the above, the dam thing took updates in about 15 mins. Typically, if all else fails, starting over with a new Windows 7 installation and going through these steps will get things back to a good state if other problems are present. And even a non computer nerd as me, has a chance to go through all the steps! You should only need the last one out of this list.
