Xp Refuses Scanner

There is not much documentation on the problem in kellys-korner but I take it that you think it matches my symptoms, correct?

One last item of strangeness is that I can launch IE7 or Firefox from the Start->All Programs tree but not from shortcuts in the taskbar. I'm then left with a dialogue box that says: "The following updates were not installed." That's it. When I do so, in the installation status field, it tries to install them but after each of the 10 options, it says, "...failed!".

  1. I had Windows 98 and then upgraded to ME, which was free.
  2. It installs the print and fax drivers just fine.
